Bury Regeneration - What’s next for the historic industrial borough

Bury Council’s website says, “The name Bury, Buri and Byri comes from the Saxon and means "a stronghold". And that’s what residents are hoping the borough will become again following the first ever Bury Expo.

Last month business leaders, investors and stakeholders met at the first Bury Regeneration Expo to discuss how Bury will be transformed over the next decade and beyond.

Organised by Bury council, in partnership with GM Business Growth Hub, the event showcased the many game-changing developments coming to the borough.

At the event, council representatives were open about the fact that the time for change was now. The last major development in Bury was The Rock in Bury town centre, which opened in 2010.

Pivotal to the success of Atom Valley is Northern Gateway, the most significant proposal in the north of the Greater Manchester conurbation and is Bury’s largest strategic allocation in the Places for Everyone Plan. The site is positioned in a strategically important intersection around the M60, M62 and M66 motorways. It represents a highly accessible opportunity for growth in Greater Manchester, with wider potential benefits on a regional and national level

A modernised transport interchange like the one recently introduced in Stockport is also planned – increasing how residents can benefit from the successes of Manchester City Centre and other local boroughs.

“Our first Bury Expo was a tremendous success, and a great opportunity for the council, the Greater Manchester Mayor and many of our key partners to celebrate the tremendous work that is being done in Bury to transform our borough.

“This includes our plans to regenerate the heart of Radcliffe, Prestwich and Bury, along with a modernised transport hub and the game-changing Northern Gateway/Atom Valley initiative.

“We all want to create a more sustainable, competitive, inclusive and resilient local economy. This is a big year for Bury, as people finally see the bulldozers move in and realise that the dreams are becoming reality.” Cllr. Eamonn O’Brien, Leader of Bury Council:
