What does being ‘innovative’ actually mean?

Innovation is not just about invention, inventors and products. It's the successful exploitation of new ideas. ‘New’ can mean new to a company, organisation, industry or sector, and can relate to services, processes and business models, as well as products.

What is it?

Innovation in Action is a fully-funded programme that comes at no financial cost to your business. It consists of three sessions split over three months:

Session One: ‘Accelerating your Innovation Journey’

Develop techniques to help your business create and evaluate ideas; gain insights into the power of market research to generate new customers and market opportunities and access funding to fuel new products and services.  This is a group session, with full networking opportunities.

Session Two: ‘In Action’
A one-to-one session with your dedicated Innovation Advisor, to develop the first stage of your bespoke innovation roadmap.

Session Three: ‘Commercialising Innovation’
Understand how to define your target customer groups and develop your USP and value proposition.   Practical hands on support in how to write an elevator pitch and identify your routes to market using alternative business models.  This is a group session, with full networking opportunities.

A business on the programme should achieve the following outcomes:

  • Develop techniques to help your business think differently
  • Reduce your time to market and achieve tangible results
  • Access funding to fuel your product development
  • Help improve the relevance of your product or service to your customers.
  • Harnessing the power of your intellectual property

Why does my business need to be innovative?

Put simply, it’s more likely to grow. The Greater Manchester Business Survey 2017 found that 44% of innovative small and medium enterprises (SMEs) reported turnover growth in the last year against 31% of non-innovative firms.

Not only that, the same report found that innovative SMEs are more committed to the development of their workforce, and are more likely to export than non-innovative firms.
