Every organisation has its unique workplace culture shaped collaboratively by the leaders and employees of the organisation. A positive workplace culture fosters team synergy and engagement, staff retention, improved productivity and performance.

A healthy workplace culture will vary depending on various factors, some common characteristics they all have include:

  • Everyone feels heard, welcomed and respected.
  • They have recognition and reward systems in place
  • Work-life balance and wellbeing are prioritised
  • The company’s values are clear and well communicated

Values led organisations are successful because they are living, breathing cultures of shared core values among all employees. They don’t just “look good” on paper—they perform better because they inspire human motivation with Vision and Purpose. - Jo Lord, Leadership Specialist, GM Business Growth Hub

Tips to creating a positive workplace culture

During our Skills Development Service Employer forum, we learned that Greater Manchester organisations are eager to create a positive work culture. Here’s some of our top tips for creating a positive workplace culture in your organisation:

1. Clearly communicate company values

As a leader in the workplace, the foundation of the culture you want your organisation to embody rests on the ability to communicate these values to ensure buy in from your team and help them incorporate them into their day-to-day activity.  While this might seem straight forward, it requires a level of skill you can develop through some of our presentation and leadership courses on GM Skills Map

2. Recognition for Good work

Praising and recognising good efforts made by the team has been proven to increase employee by 37%. This can be done via verbal praise, rewards like vouchers, shout outs at team meetings or even bonuses. A culture of positive reinforcement enables a team to tap more into their strengths and provide better outcomes.

3. Encourage Feedback

This can be done via feedback forms, focus groups or team meetings. Encourage feedback from the team and ensure that their feedback leads to action.

4. Promote Inclusivity

Create various avenues where the diverse backgrounds of the organisation can be celebrated and learn more about one another. This fosters an open space for team members to learn more about each other and creates a sense of belonging.

5. Offer Incentives/Career Progressions

For staff that has been dedicated and eager to develop and upskill, supporting them in their skills development journey has been found to ensure employee retention and employee engagement within the organisation. This can be achieved via GM Skills map with our fully funded courses and trainings.

People are at the heart of every business and when the team feels a sense of belonging and buy into the company’s values, they take pride in their work and are highly motivated to perform better and meet company’s objectives.
