KANE, a UK manufacturer of gas measuring systems, had made the strategic decision to expand its manufacturing and service operations in Atherton, Greater Manchester. But building a new operational base is only half the challenge. KANE needed to upskill their workforce in Atherton — one that could match the company’s high standards for quality, safety, and innovation.
Enter the GM Business Growth Hub
Jonathan Hoole, the Managing Director of KANE, met with Angela Robinson, a Manufacturing Advisor at the GM Business Growth Hub. Acknowledging the scale of the transition ahead, Angela introduced Jonathan to the BGH specialist manufacturing team, including Stephen Booth. Together, they developed a customised support programme.
The initial step was a workshop focused on Manufacturing Culture and Leadership, aimed at helping KANE’s new team cultivate the mindset and skills necessary to take ownership of the factory floor. This was followed by a Lean Champion workshop and a session on Problem Solving and Root Cause Analysis.
Workforce Transformation in Action
The results were immediate and tangible. Employees began contributing ideas, enhancing internal communication, and addressing production issues with confidence. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) were implemented, and a culture of continuous improvement began to flourish.
GM Business Growth Hub also supports KANE with organisational development. Working with our organisation team, they have accessed process information and templates to establish a robust onboarding process, stay interviews and are now implementing a rewards and recognition system.
KANE are currently progressing with the Skills Development opportunities offered as part of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority's (GMCA) investment expansion to boost Greater Manchester's skills. By identifying the organisation's skills gaps and the career aspirations of their team, they can access the specialist training available to future-proof their workforce.
“Thanks to the Growth Hub, our team now has the tools and confidence to lead,” said Jonathan. “It’s not just about training—it’s about transformation.”
Investing in Future Talent
KANE’s partnership with BGH also helped the company connect with local education providers. In collaboration with The Manchester College, KANE offered T Level placements to four students, two of whom have already received job offers.
The company has also partnered with Bedford High School in Atherton, where Jonathan delivered careers talks to inspire students to consider engineering. These initiatives are helping Kane build a sustainable talent pipeline and give back to the community.
A Model for Regional Growth
KANE’s story exemplifies how targeted business support drives regional development. With BGH’s assistance, KANE has improved its operations and created a motivated, skilled workforce ready to grow.
