A Turning Point in a Creative Journey
When a business built on creativity faces a moment of uncertainty, the challenge isn’t just about survival—it’s about rediscovering its identity and building the foundations for future success. For Tracks and Layers, a Manchester-based motion graphics studio, a change in ownership in late 2023 sparked a journey that would transform not only its brand but its entire way of working.
From Broadcast Roots to Bold Ambitions
For over a decade, Tracks and Layers has been crafting motion graphics and animation for some of the UK’s biggest broadcasters and production companies. From title sequences and animated explainers to visual effects and graphics packages, the studio’s work has appeared across children’s TV, drama, documentaries, and sport. Known for its adaptability and creative breadth, the team thrives on delivering visuals that move audiences.
But when a minority shareholder exited the business, founder Mike Pettyt found himself at a crossroads. The departure left a gap in leadership and strategic support—one that couldn’t be filled by creative talent alone.
“I underestimated the void of having somebody there to support me in terms of the direction of business and the vision,” Mike recalls.
Laying the Groundwork for Growth
Mike had built Tracks and Layers on passion and skill, but he lacked formal business training. Running a creative studio meant juggling client delivery with leadership responsibilities, and without a clear roadmap, the pressure mounted. He needed clarity, accountability, and a renewed sense of purpose to steer the business forward.
A chance encounter at a networking event led Mike back to GM Business Growth Hub, where tailored support began to reshape the future of Tracks and Layers.
Leadership Programme:
Specialists worked closely with Mike and his team to redefine the company’s purpose, vision, and values. Through workshops like Power of Values, the team explored what mattered most—both personally and professionally—and aligned around a shared direction. This wasn’t just an exercise in words; it became the foundation for a bold rebrand and a new website that captured the studio’s creative spirit.
Mentoring:
Mike was paired with Tom, a mentor whose experience helped him shift from working in the business to working on it.
“Tom made me really focus on getting the right team… not just compromise. He brought much-needed accountability and helped me be more decisive,” Mike explains.
Tom encouraged Mike to invest in “great” people and promote a talented team member into a people management role—freeing Mike to focus on leadership and strategy. Together, they explored ways to strengthen team cohesion, from collaborative projects to an office move that fostered better communication. They also tackled one of the biggest growth challenges: consistent revenue generation. Historically reliant on word-of-mouth, Tracks and Layers is now building a proactive sales funnel to take control of its pipeline.
“Mentorship as opposed to consultancy is so powerful in creating enduring success,” Tom notes.
From Uncertainty to a Strong Foundation
The impact of this support has been profound. Tracks and Layers didn’t just overcome a leadership gap—it built a stronger base for sustainable growth. The leadership work clarified values and created a framework for decision-making that now guides every aspect of the business. Recruitment is no longer reactive; it’s strategic, ensuring new hires align with the company’s vision and culture.
The rebrand marked a turning point. With a fresh visual identity and a dynamic new website, the studio now projects confidence and creativity to the world.
“We’ve got a great foundation now for how we present ourselves… lots of positive feedback,” says Mike.
Financially, the business is on an upward trajectory, with turnover increasing by 16% year-on-year. But beyond the numbers, the biggest impact is cultural. The team feels energised, the vision is clear, and decision-making is sharper.
“It’s only been two years since we started this journey, but we’ve achieved so much—new people, new branding, and a stronger vision for the future.”
Today, Tracks and Layers operates with clarity and confidence, supported by systems and values that will underpin its growth for years to come.
Why Mike Says Growth Hub Was a Game-Changer
Tracks and Layers’ story is proof that creative businesses don’t have to navigate change alone. With the right support, moments of uncertainty can become catalysts for growth. Mike’s advice to other business owners is clear:
“I think people are doing themselves a real disservice by not engaging with this kind of support. It’s funded, it’s free at the point of use, and the people you work with have decades of real business experience. What have you got to lose—other than a bit of time? For me, it’s been transformative.”
