Bolton-based Lagan’s Healthcare is developing a groundbreaking virtual reality platform – supported by £31,000 innovation funding and wraparound support.

In 2011, Carren Bell lost her daughter, Lagan, to complex heart defects at just 15 weeks old. Channelling this unimaginable personal tragedy into purpose, she set up Lagan’s Foundation, a charity providing unique home healthcare and respite for North West families and children living with complex health needs.

But that was just the beginning. In 2022, Carren founded Lagan’s Healthcare, a digital health technology organisation focused on raising standards through professional training and support. Now, with backing from GM Business Growth Hub’s Innovation Service, she’s preparing to launch Lagan’s HealthcareVR – immersive virtual reality training that equips care professionals for the real-world challenges of their work.

Innovative training built around real-world challenges

“There’s a significant gap in how care workers are currently trained for community-based roles,” explains Carren, who in December 2025 was named Third Sector Leader of the Year at the Women Achieving Greatness Awards. “Most existing solutions are either too theoretical or are designed for hospital environments, meaning they fail to reflect the realities of working in people’s homes, where distractions, unpredictability and environmental challenges are common.

“Training is also inconsistent across the sector, often relying on outdated methods or formats that exclude those with limited access to digital tools. The result is a workforce that feels underprepared, experiences higher stress and faces increased risk of burnout or leaving the profession entirely.”

Carren’s idea was for a platform that recreates real-life home care scenarios, and uses AI to track performance and deliver personalised feedback. The goal was to improve both the competence and confidence of health and social care workers, across everything from clinical tasks to soft skills such as communication, decision-making and empathy.

A collaborative path to commercialisation

To bring this concept to life, Lagan’s Healthcare self-funded an initial phase of developing a minimum viable product with the University of Salford and the Manchester Immersive Technology and Innovation Hub.

To progress the MVP into a fully functional product, Carren turned to GM Business Growth Hub. The company successfully applied for £31,248 in innovation grant funding to work with the University of Salford’s THINKlab, technical innovation specialists with more than 15 years’ experience in delivering bespoke visualisation and software solutions for clients including the BBC, GlaxoSmithKline, Network Rail and Siemens.

With the help of Dr Yousef Taktak, Health and Life Sciences Specialist at GM Business Growth Hub, a three-month project was scoped and initiated. The work programme included scenario design finalisation and dialogue development; build and internal testing; and performance optimisation, compliance review, and a controlled external pilot to test usability and training impact.

“This funding and support is a vital step in proving market readiness and securing future investment,” says Carren. “A successful pilot will enable us to license the Lagan’s HealthcareVR platform to care providers, colleges and training organisations, and drive our next phase of growth. It will enable us to build an early adopter pipeline, attract investment, and strategically plan commercial growth over the following 12 months.”

The platform will be licensable and supported by a validated business model by mid-2026, with two new full-time jobs created and more to follow when successful commercialisation is achieved. Several training providers and care organisations are already engaged and interested in piloting the product. The three-year forecast projects £500,000 turnover and net profits of £110,000 by March 2028.

For Dr Yousef Taktak, the project underlines the power of collaboration in accelerating innovation: “Lagan’s Healthcare are a small team, so their ability to scale quickly may be constrained. To overcome this, they’ve leveraged third-party experts based in Greater Manchester to bring specialist skills into the project at pace. Alongside this, internal staff are being trained throughout the project lifecycle to develop in-house expertise and ensure continuity. It’s a great example of an SME taking advantage of the wide-ranging life sciences support that’s available.”
