Business Growth Hub shortlisted for sustainability award

The Business Growth Hub has been shortlisted for the Sustainability Impact of the Year at the ENDS Environmental Impact Awards 2017 in recognition of our unique approach to business support.

The awards, established by national environmental intelligence specialists, ENDS, recognise the essential contribution of environmental professionals and environmental organisations to sustainability.

The shortlist was decided by an independent panel of environmental industry experts who looked at how entrants demonstrated excellence and measured their impact on society.

The Hub was selected for its ground-breaking ‘Green Growth’ approach to driving forward the transition to a low carbon economy in Greater Manchester.

Dual approach

The Hub helps SMEs in all sectors to identify, quantify and implement environmental measures that reduce emissions and improve productivity, which in turn stimulates demand for low carbon goods and services that is connected to local suppliers as part of a dedicated sector development service.

Since January 2015, the project has helped SMEs achieve annually recurring savings of £2.2 million by improving environmental performance, as well as generating £7.3 million in sales for local companies in the low carbon sector.

Also shortlisted for Impact of the Year awards were The National Trust’s Renewable Energy Investment programme and the Environment Agency’s work to reduce supply chain emissions.

‘Seizing potential’

Sam Nicholson, head of low carbon and manufacturing at the Hub, said: “Our challenge was to create and deliver an effective business support programme for Greater Manchester that aligns to the city’s climate change objectives, to the economic development objectives of our public funders, and which helps SMEs seize the growth potential of a low carbon economy.

“We are completely unique in providing fully-funded, advisor-led business support that boosts both the supply of, and demand for, low carbon goods and services within a major city region and it’s great that this work is being recognised alongside national bodies like the National Trust and Environment Agency.”

The winners will be announced on 4 May.
