Extra energy bill support for firms with ‘non-standard’ supply

Along with manufacturers in energy-intensive sectors, some firms that receive their power from ‘non-standard’ routes will now qualify for additional support to cover their high energy costs.

Energy-intensive businesses operating within certain SIC codes designated as Energy and Trade Intensive Industries (ETII) have been able to claim higher government-funded discounts on their energy bills since the start of May 2023.

The government has now also extended additional support to manufacturers and other businesses that use a ‘license-exempt’ supplier for their electricity. This includes those that are based on a site with a private electricity network, for example businesses that are connected directly to a small-scale solar or wind farm.

The new ‘Non-Standard Customers’ scheme means these companies can access back-dated discounts that could amount to thousands of pounds off their energy bills.

Companies that may be eligible for either the ETII or Non-Standard Customers schemes are being urged to check their eligibility on GOV.UK, where they will need to apply for the additional support.

Most businesses in the UK that sit outside of these schemes are now receiving little-to-no government discount on their bills due to a reduction in support from April 2023.

Despite the wholesale cost of energy falling rapidly since the peaks of mid-2022, experts are warning that electricity prices will still level out at levels far above what businesses were used to before the pandemic.

Taking measures to improve energy efficiency should therefore remain a priority for manufacturers over the coming years.
