Rochdale manufacturer showcased at global climate summit

Crystal Doors, whose efforts to cut carbon emissions have been supported by GC Business Growth Hub and Made Smarter, featured at COP26 in Glasgow as one of nine ‘outstanding organisations’.

The Rochdale manufacturer, which makes vinyl-wrapped doors and accessories for kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms, was highlighted at the climate summit as an exemplar in sustainability by Nigel Topping, the government’s High Level Champion for Climate Action.

Crystal Doors has spent over £1.5 million over the past five years on reducing its carbon emissions and expects to reach net zero status imminently.

A series of sustainability investments - including energy saving lighting and equipment, solar panels and a world-first AI-powered dust extractor - led to a prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Sustainable Development earlier in 2021.

GC Business Growth Hub’s Resource Efficiency and Manufacturing services have played a key role in helping Crystal Doors to embed lean and energy saving measures in the factory. The company’s partnership with Made Smarter also resulted in a three-month internship project to implement a network of sensors that will provide insight into how machines are performing.

In Conversation with Crystal Doors

Speaking just before COP26 began in November, Richard Hagan, Managing Director, said:

“The climate summit in Glasgow will focus on technology, leadership and commitment. Our contribution is to show that every organisation of any size can achieve significant reductions in costs and the emission reductions required to slow climate change.

“The purpose of every business is to improve wellbeing and success for everyone. We have a work culture that is constantly adapting, and each team member is regularly challenged with new technology to manage and skills to learn.”

Nearly 200 nations agreed a series of new commitments in Glasgow in attempt to keep climate change in check. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham also attended the summit at a special event alongside Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram.

Greater Manchester businesses are being urged to start their own green journey through Bee Net Zero, a new platform which signposts advice and support available within the city region. This includes the Hub’s online Journey to Net Zero programme, which is designed specifically for businesses at an early stage in their journey.
