‘Huge’ vote of public confidence in UK manufacturing

A national survey has revealed that three quarters of people now believe more strongly in the importance of UK manufacturing as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The snapshot poll of 2,000 people, conducted as part of the 2020 Attitudes to UK Industry survey, also found that 71 per cent think the sector has risen to the challenge of responding to the Coronavirus and supporting the NHS.

A further 68 per cent now believe that the UK economy should be rebalanced to raise the contribution of manufacturing as compared with services, while nearly three quarters (74 per cent) agree that a strategic plan to help UK manufacturing become more productive and competitive will help insulate the nation from future pandemics.

Tom Spencer, Managing Director of Cadence Innovation Marketing, which sponsored the research, said:

“Our study clearly shows that the UK public has swung behind UK industry at a time when many manufacturers have stepped up to support the nation.

“What lies ahead now is a very testing period for UK industry as we face down the resultant economic turmoil of the pandemic. As productivity, skills, trade barriers and environmental factors all grow in importance, UK industry is approaching a time of generational importance.

“I believe that the UK is actually very well placed to be a global leader in the era of Industry 4.0 and digital transformation. Public support for the sector, if mirrored by strategic leadership and government support, offers a unique opportunity for UK industry to rise from this era stronger than ever.”
