Industry gears up for International Women in Engineering Day

International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) on 23 June will celebrate the impact of female engineers across the globe and highlight the exciting career opportunities available to young women.

Established by the Women’s Engineering Society, INWED aims to raise the profile of women in engineering roles. The 2020 campaign, which will follow the theme of ‘Shape the World’, is being sponsored by a number of high-profile organisations including Boeing and the Royal Air Force.

This year, the campaign will highlight the role of engineering in environmental issues by announcing a Top 50 Women in Sustainability list.

Elizabeth Donnelly, Chief Executive of the Women’s Engineering Society, said:

“INWED20 is an amazing campaign that recognises the careers available to women in engineering. The 2020 theme ties in with the challenges facing us in an uncertain future and invites engineers to share how they are tackling such topics as the climate emergency.”

Businesses can take part in INWED20 by downloading resources from the INWED website and promoting #INWED20 and #ShapeTheWorld on social media.

Meanwhile, to mark International Women’s Day on 8 March, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has launched its 2020 Young Woman Engineer of the Year Awards.

The awards celebrate women working in modern engineering and aim to change the perception that engineering is predominantly a career for men.

Opening the awards for entries, Jo Foster, IET Diversity and Inclusion Manager, said:

“We want to make it clear that engineering is a fantastic career for women. Outdated views and stereotypes are damaging to the industry, especially when there is a significant shortage of engineers, which poses a serious threat to the economy. It’s vital we champion engineering – it’s a diverse, creative and exciting career, which offers the opportunity to do something life – or even – world changing.”
