Futurists and technologists at BAE Systems have predicted that the top job roles likely to exist by the year 2040 include titles like Auto-Advisor, AI Ethicist and Systems Farmer.

Artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR) and robotics were all identified as fields that will generate top manufacturing careers in the future, which will include:

• Auto-Advisors: Experts who provide advice to companies on where robotic automation can be applied and identify opportunities for upgrades

• VR Architect: Specialists in virtual and augmented reality who can map and monitor the lifespan of component parts so they can be managed effectively and safely

• AI Ethicist: AI technicians who will ensure that AI is programmed, deployed and maintained responsibly so it can be trusted to make complex decisions

• Systems Farmer: Lab workers who will use synthetic biology and chemical engineering in production to ‘grow’ component parts with revolutionary features

• Human e-Sources Manager: A new form of HR worker who will use performance-based wearables or e-textiles to measure cognitive workload and wellbeing in employees

• AI Translator: Cross-skilled workers will be responsible for training both humans and AI assistants, helping them develop an effective ‘teaming’ relationship.

Whilst it’s impossible for today’s young people to know exactly where their career will take them in the next 20 years, a wide range of skills will be useful in future-proofing the careers of young people today. Indeed, subjects as varied as Graphic Design, Philosophy, Chemical Engineering and Cybersecurity will prove valuable for the jobs of tomorrow.”
