Hub gives legal service increased momentum

An innovative legal business based in Bolton gets the strategic business support it needs to launch a new-to-firm product and grow at pace.

The Overview

Having identified a gap in the market, Bolton business Momentum Legal wanted to launch a new service for small and medium-sized enterprises in the North West, providing advice and guidance on handling complex HR issues.

On the back of support from the Business Growth Hub’s innovation team and the University of Bolton, owner Asif Timol [pictured] has launched the new service with confidence, with turnover to grow by 20 per cent in the first year.

The Challenge

Asif, a solicitor who trained at leading legal firm Irwin Mitchell, wanted help developing a strategy for the launch of his business, and advice on how to access the marketplace.

He also wanted to build strong links and collaborate with the University of Bolton’s Law School, with a view to employing graduates and providing work experience opportunities which would increase their employability post-graduation.

The Solution

Asif began working with the Hub’s innovation adviser Paul Halliday, alongside Sue Warburton [pictured], Innovation Business Development Manager at the University of Bolton, who helped him develop a series of action plans that would serve as the launchpad for the business.

“I took part in several idea generation sessions which helped to clarify my thinking and really speeded up the whole process of launching the business,” explains Asif. “I felt that I was lacking focus – and the support gave me the confidence and new skills needed to make better strategic decisions and take the business forward.”

He also attended several of the Hub’s networking events and a two-day Managing and Leadership course provided by Total Excellence Centre.

“I was introduced to contacts, organisations and training which I simply wouldn’t normally have had access to,” he continues. “And working with the legal department at the University also looks like it’s going to lead to an interesting new collaborative project, as well.”

Asif also received expert help to develop and manage social media for the business, particularly during the initial launch phase, as well as support updating his website to showcase the service and attract new customers.

In the first six months of trading, Momentum Legal has worked with a number of businesses in a diverse range of sectors, from construction to motor parts, as well as representing individuals in cases ranging from personal injuries to grievances at work.

The business has now completed the design of its new service package − a budgeted employment law plan that tells businesses from the outset what’s provided and fixes their cost on a monthly basis.

The service should come as a relief to business owners because running a business leaves little time for employers to be fully-knowledgeable with legal requirements and abreast of the most rapidly developing area of law.

Meanwhile legal fees are notorious for being excessive, unpredictable and determined by a ticking clock – often with little control on the amount to be incurred. This new service offers business protection, no talk of chargeable time and, most importantly, no surprise charges.

This is a major step forward for Momentum Legal and will grow their existing turnover in the first year by 20 per cent.

To keep pace, Asif has taken on a new, full-time Business Development Manager as well as encouraging an existing employee to upskill and sign-up to a “Paralegal Apprenticeship” which will enable growth internally.
