Greater Manchester Good Employment Charter Launches 2023 Good Employment Week

The Greater Manchester Good Employment Charter has announced plans to hold the first ever ‘Good Employment Week’ between 19th and 24th June, 2023.

The annual week of activities aims to raise awareness of good practice when it comes to employment in the region. To this end, the Charter intends to engage with employees through a short, interactive quiz that asks a simple question – “How good is your job?”

By doing so, they want to highlight what “good work” looks like, so the people of Greater Manchester can better recognise it, enjoy it, and advocate for it.

Commenting on the initiative, Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham said:

“Our city-region is once again leading the way through the Greater Manchester Good Employment Charter. As we go through economic challenges and major disruptions to the way we work, good employment is more important than ever before. By supporting the Charter, employers and partners like you are making a commitment to do right by your employees, and we want that support to continue as we move towards the first-ever Good Employment Week.

“There are now over 560 employers engaged with the Charter, setting an example to help make our city-region an area of employment excellence. I want to thank you for your commitment to the Charter and we look forward to celebrating with you during Good Employment Week.”

What is the Greater Manchester Good Employment Charter?

The Good Employment Charter is a voluntary membership and assessment scheme that aims to raise employment standards across Greater Manchester. Organisations of any size, sector, or geography can sign up to the Charter.

The Charter wants Greater Manchester to be a place where people are paid fairly for their work, treated appropriately, and provided with inclusive opportunities. At the same time, the Charter wants to see the city-region’s economy thrive, with organisations that are productive and effective at its heart.

What is Good Employment?

The Charter has seven characteristics of good employment that are connected by a central theme of equality, diversity, and inclusion.

Involvement in the Charter means employers are working towards excellence, or have already achieved excellence, in the following areas:

  1. Secure Work
  2. Flexible Work
  3. Engagement & Voice
  4. Recruitment
  5. People Management
  6. Health and Wellbeing
  7. Pay
