Google-backed carbon calculator launched for SMEs

A calculator available for free through the UN-backed SME Climate Hub website helps small businesses to measure their emissions and identify emission hot spots.

A calculator available for free through the UN-backed SME Climate Hub website helps small businesses to measure their emissions and identify emission hot spots.

The online tool, developed by carbon accounting engine Normative with support from Google.org, allows users to input their easily accessible data into a simple-to-use form. The resulting footprint information establishes a baseline from which to take action.

The calculator takes into account a company’s direct and energy carbon footprint (also known as Scope 1 and 2 emissions), as well as some of the more difficult-to-measure indirect impacts through business activities such as travel and material use (also known as Scope 3 emissions).

“We need to act now. The climate will not wait for us to be ready,” said Kristian Rönn, CEO and co-founder of Normative. “We want to make measuring carbon emissions and joining the race to net zero accessible to everyone. This new tool is our second step towards engaging value chains across the world, and we will continue to develop and push our technology to help businesses take climate action.”

Access to skills and knowledge

In a recent survey of small businesses by the SME Climate Hub, two thirds of respondents said they did not feel they have the right skills or knowledge to take robust climate action, despite the vast majority identifying it as a priority.

“Taken on an individual scale, each small business has a relatively moderate carbon footprint. However, together, these small businesses have a huge impact – both on the planet and on their communities,” explained María Mendiluce, CEO of the We Mean Business Coalition, a founding partner of the SME Climate Hub.

“To limit the effects of climate change, and to create a just future that leaves no one behind, it’s imperative that every business, of every size, has the tools they need to prioritise climate action. We are proud the SME Climate Hub can help bridge this resource gap through tools like the Normative Business Carbon Calculator.”
