Clean energy tariffs among cheapest on the market

New research has revealed that green energy ‘has never been more affordable or so widely available’ for households, with eco-friendly tariffs making up five of the cheapest ten tariffs currently available.

New research has revealed that green energy ‘has never been more affordable or so widely available’ for households, with eco-friendly tariffs making up five of the cheapest ten tariffs currently available.

The findings come from comparison and switching site, uSwitch, which looked at the cheapest tariffs on the market in August 2018 and surveyed 2,000 households on their views.

According to uSwitch, the ten cheapest ‘eco-tariffs’ on the market could save homes an average of £273 a year.

Eco-tariffs are defined as those that, for every unit of electricity used, the same amount is produced and put back into the grid from a renewable source such as wind or solar power. Some tariffs also source some of their gas from renewable ‘bio-gas’ sources.

The number of eco-tariffs on the market has increased by a third since this time last year thanks to an increasing supply of renewable electricity and gas on the grid, leading to more competitive pricing.

Greater Manchester has even launched its own city-wide ‘Big Clean Switch’ campaign to encourage residents to move to a greener tariff.

‘No longer an expensive luxury’

Four in ten of the households surveyed by uSwitch said they would now consider switching to an eco-friendly tariff, rising to seven in ten amongst 18-24 year olds.

Shona Eyre, energy expert at uSwitch, said: “With green energy tariffs now featuring heavily in the best-buy tables, planet-friendly deals are no longer an expensive luxury for those who can afford to pay for their principles.

“Huge investment in sustainable gas and electricity has led to almost a third of the UK’s electricity coming from renewable sources. As more suppliers differentiate themselves by focusing on the environment, green tariffs are becoming much more widespread and much cheaper.”

Business electricity

Although the uSwitch research focuses on household energy, switching to green energy is also of increasing interest to business consumers.

Using 100 per cent renewable electricity has been described as the quickest and most cost-effective way to reduce a business’ carbon footprint, and recent research shows that the majority of businesses believe renewable energy is the key to a cleaner future.
