Innovate UK has developed a flexible online tool to help businesses incorporate sustainability thinking in their business to inform commercial decisions.
The Horizons tool sets out a range of social and environmental factors that can be used as a checklist and brainstorming tool to inform business strategy.
The aim is to support strategies and innovations that deliver growth while operating within safe environmental limits and providing social value.
The tool was developed in collaboration with environmental non-profit, Forum for the Future, and global asset management firm, Aviva Investors, and can be accessed free of charge.
In particular, the tool helps businesses to explore the challenges that are driving changes in market opportunities, and how best to respond.
The concept focuses on a suite of ‘cards’, each providing an overview of a different sustainability issue, such as pollution, skills, waste and energy security. Included for each is an explanation of why the issue is important, and suggestions for ways in which a business can take account of any related risks or opportunities.
The tool then guides the user through these issues by suggesting actions that the business ‘must’, ‘should’ or ‘could’ take. It can be used as part of a structured journey, or as a useful reference tool.
By understanding these issues and the trends associated with them, Innovate UK believes that businesses will be more able to prepare themselves for the future.
The tool also includes a range of case studies showing how businesses across many sectors are tackling each issue, including leading firms such as Caterpillar, Unilever, Pepsico and M&S.
