The Green Growth Pledge has been launched to encourage businesses to take advantage of the significant cost-saving opportunity presented by resource efficiency.
Figures from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) suggest that UK business has the potential to save £55 million by taking simple, cost effective actions to improve resource efficiency; nearly half of which can be achieved at no cost or can be paid back within a year.
By providing a range of simple, easy-to-follow commitments to improve resource efficiency and become more sustainable, the online scheme helps companies to tap into this opportunity to reduce costs whilst raising their corporate profile in the process.
Richard Jeffery, director of the Business Growth Hub, said: “We’ve launched the Green Growth Pledge to give companies a platform to shout about all the great things they’re doing to be efficient and sustainable businesses.
“It doesn’t matter what size or sector your business is in – the opportunity to promote what you do and stand out from the competition should always be welcomed. When it comes to accessing public sector and blue chip contracts in particular, the ability to demonstrate your green credentials is now a core necessity, and the bar will only be raised higher in future.”
Companies can choose from over 50 different actions spanning 14 separate business areas, from heating and lighting to environmental policy. Some are simple changes that can be achieved quickly and at no cost, while others involve more complex changes or new investment, thereby providing a launch pad to research further opportunities and next steps.
The scheme can also be used to log actions that are already being taken to become more sustainable, making it a useful resource for recording past achievements as well as committing to new ones.
