Furniture manufacturer boosts turnover with business support

Bespoke furniture manufacturer, Bluebell Fitted Furniture, has increased its turnover by a third with resource efficiency and digital support from Greater Manchester’s Business Growth Hub.

Bespoke furniture manufacturer, Bluebell Fitted Furniture, increased its turnover by a third with resource efficiency and digital support from Greater Manchester’s Business Growth Hub.

The Sale-based company designs, manufactures and fits bespoke furniture for kitchens, bedrooms, media areas and home studies.

At the close of its financial year in September 2015, the firm had achieved turnover of £1.6 million, an increase of 33 per cent from £1.2 million in 2014.

Growth support

The Business Growth Hub’s Digital Growth team helped Bluebell to launch a new responsive website which has contributed significantly to business growth and created three new full-time positions at the company.

Bluebell also received support from the Hub’s Green Growth team, which helped it to boost its bottom line by implementing new measures to increase energy efficiency and reduce waste.

Green measures

Following an on-site resource efficiency audit to identify ways to improve efficiency and save money, the Green Growth team worked with Bluebell to invite local green technology suppliers on its low carbon sector development programme to Bluebell’s premises to help them make an informed decision on the best solutions available.

As a result, Bluebell installed energy efficient LED lighting fittings and a biomass burner to heat its premises using waste wood from production, resulting in savings of £13,000 a year in electricity, gas and waste costs. It is also investigating a further opportunity to install 120 solar panels on its roof.

‘Fresh perspective’

Mike and Alison Reuben, directors of Bluebell Fitted Furniture, said: “Working with the Hub has allowed us to explore opportunities we did not know were available to us.

“When running a business, it is easy to become caught up in the day-to-day, so it is a huge help to hear ideas and guidance from someone who has been there and done it, and who can bring a fresh perspective to the table.”

Laura Bramley, Green Growth environmental business advisor, said: “Bluebell’s story is a great example of how our Green Growth service can help to connect local suppliers and local buyers –boosting Greater Manchester’s low carbon economy in the process”.

Bluebell is now planning to use its recent growth to branch out into the luxury furniture market and is developing a virtual apartment in its showroom to promote its new range.
