A food storage, distribution and contract packing service business in Redditch is one of just 11 companies to be recognised for Sustainable Development in the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise 2017.
Now in its 51st year, the awards are one of the most prestigious business awards in the country, with winning businesses able to use the esteemed Queen’s Awards emblem for the next five years.
In total, 176 UK SMEs were recognised across four categories: international trade, innovation, sustainable development and promoting opportunity.
Oakland International was presented with the Sustainable Development award for its mission “to provide an unrivalled service in supply chain management, achieved through sustainability”.
It was one of six companies to win more than one award, having also been recognised in the international trade category.
The company, which operates in 11 countries and has facilities in the UK, Ireland and Spain, has a 10 year strategy to become the first carbon neutral business within its sector.
Environmental initiatives already in place include installing nearly 1,700 solar PV panels, introducing an electric company pool car and electric bike rental scheme for employees, managing the quality of power supply, ensuring extensive recycling of waste material, and installing a sustainable reed bed sewage treatment plant on-site.
It is also in the process of installing a specialist energy management system that will show real-time energy consumption for all areas of the business. Future planned projects include rainwater harvesting, voltage optimisation and Carbon Trust certification.
Dean Attwell, chief executive and co-founder of Oakland International, said: “Winning the Queen’s Awards for International Trade and Sustainable Development is the greatest compliment and the ultimate acknowledgement as a UK business we can receive.
“The Oakland team is passionate about our core values of growth through sustainable innovation, for delivering value offerings, for our strong ethical stance and social conscience – these values sustain, invigorate and assist in our ability to grow in the UK, Ireland and Europe.”
