Carbon Trust to develop supply chain certification

The Carbon Trust has announced that it is developing a new certification for organisations that are taking effective action on the carbon emissions across their supply chains.

The Carbon Trust has announced that it is developing a new certification for organisations that are taking effective action on the carbon emissions across their supply chains.

The certification will provide a quantitative and qualitative framework for recognising organisations that have committed to take action on their supply chain’s environmental impacts.

The certification process will involve measuring impacts and improving processes and systems, allowing organisations to move forward from an initial commitment stage through to the implementation and measurement of carbon reduction initiatives.

‘Real leaders’

Darran Messem, managing director of certification at the Carbon Trust, said: “For a typical organisation, up to 90 per cent of the carbon impacts are outside of its own boundaries of operational control.

“A number of companies are now very good at energy efficiency and cutting carbon inside their own four walls, but the real leaders are starting to look at how they have an impact across the supply chain.”

Greening supply chains

The announcement comes shortly after the publication of a new report, commissioned by logistics group DHL, which calls on businesses to embrace the concept of the ‘green supply chain’.

The report highlights that pressure from consumers, compliance requirements and the need to improve efficiency and cut costs mean that proactive businesses are beginning to change their approach to supply chain management.

‘Shift in attitudes’

Author of the report, Lisa Harrington, said: “A great shift in attitudes is currently underway across industries. Gone are the old and dated misconceptions that ‘green’ means higher costs.

"Where the environmental supply chain model is executed correctly, companies are capitalising on increased revenue and social kudos from customers, while also ensuring their business is operating in line with necessary compliance measures.”

Pilot opportunity

The Carbon Trust is currently looking to work with a number of organisations from different sectors as part of an initial pilot phase for its supply chain certification.
