GLD Technical Consulting, a building services and environmental design consultancy based in Wigan, is continuing its impressive growth journey thanks to support from GC Business Growth Hub.
The company has evolved significantly since forming as a mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) services consultancy in 2014. Founder Laura Dunlop, an experienced building services and environmental engineer, set up the business to give her greater flexibility to work around childcare responsibilities and assist her work in supporting women in the construction industry.
After being entered onto a start-up support programme with GC Business Growth Hub in 2014, GLD took on staff and an office space and went on to work on various commercial construction projects before cash-flow restrictions, staffing issues and the lack of a marketing strategy started to prevent further growth.
A second round of support through the Hub’s Spark2Scale programme in 2017 helped GLD to work on its marketing and eventually engage with the Hub’s specialist Green Technologies and Services Sector team.
GLD is now a member of the Hub’s online Low Carbon Network, helping it to reach new clients and tap into environmental opportunities in the construction sector both locally and beyond.
Green tech advisors have also supported the company with identifying and preparing for new, emerging market opportunities. Among other areas, GLD is now positioning itself to tap into the growing market for energy assessments and building the residential side of its portfolio.
“GC Business Growth Hub has been an ever-present resource for me as a business owner”, Laura Dunlop said. “At GLD we are committed to supporting local initiatives such as the Wigan Deal, so being able to access support from a local organisation like GC Business Growth Hub fits in perfectly with our ethos.”
“Overall, the Hub’s support has already helped us to create three new jobs and I look forward to seeing what we can achieve through future construction, retrofit and low carbon opportunities within Greater Manchester and further afield.”
