Salford Royal Hospital in Greater Manchester is to slash its energy costs by nearly £2 million a year after receiving a £6.9 million funding package to install energy saving measures.
The project is funded by the UK Green Investment Bank (GIB) and financial group, DLL, as part of the multimillion pound Carbon and Energy Fund (CEF), which was established in 2011 to fund and facilitate complex infrastructure upgrades for the NHS and wider public sector.
As part of the planned programme of measures, the hospital’s energy centre will undergo a full refresh, including the installation of a new 2.5MW combined heat and power (CHP) system to increase the efficiency of power generation on-site.
Other energy reduction measures to be installed include LED lighting and an optimised building management system.
Reliability and resilience
Ed Northam, head of investment banking at the GIB, said: “The NHS is one of the UK’s biggest energy consumers and upgrading existing technology will increase the reliability and resilience of its entire estate.
“This programme of energy efficient improvements will save energy, cut costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions without impinging on patient care.”
The project is due to be complete by the end of 2016 and is expected to cut annual energy costs by £1.9 million, as well as reduce carbon emissions.
The design, construction, installation and management of the scheme will be carried out by Blackburn-based Vital Energi under a 15-year energy performance contract.
