In 2016, they entered the second instalment of SpaceX competition and having successfully advanced to the Finals, are now preparing a prototype to showcase at SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California, where they will have a chance to run it in a 1200m Hyperloop and test its performance. HYPED received great feedback from the SpaceX judges but did not complete the run because of software issues. HYPED had registered for the next installment of the competition already and will be now building a self-propelled Hyperloop prototype to participate in SpaceX event in summer 2018.

The group has also been shortlisted as a semi-finalist in Hyperloop One Global Challenge where we pitched Edinburgh to London route as the corridor where Hyperloop will bring a massive socioeconomic change - our entry was one of 35 selected among 2600 entrants. We presented to a panel of judges and experts in Amsterdam (June 2017) and have been selected as one of ten winners of the Global Challenge. This is an enormous success putting HYPED at the centre of Hyperloop developments worldwide. As a result, the team will work closely with Hyperloop One on refining the idea for our route. It is worth mentioning that HYPED is the only student group in the winning ten - other groups include leading engineering consultants and contractors, governments, policy-makers and governmental agencies.

The group unites few dozen students from all walks of academic life and different ages who work together to bring this technology closer to reality. They try to be ambitious but realistic and focus on an academic approach to the topic in order to maximise the benefit from Hyperloop technology. Their work is supported by The University of Edinburgh and sponsors such as Cirrus Logic, RS Components and Costain and having got serious interest from various entities, including the UK Government, and look forward to a bright (and hyped!) future.
