Illuminating support helps The Light Yard navigate the road to growth

Mentoring provides the insights and a sounding board for Jeff Fuller, Director of The Light Yard, to double growth year-on-year.

The Overview

The Light Yard is a Wigan-based business that sells high-end contemporary and architectural lighting to clients in the UK and around the world. Established by Jeff Fuller, the company provides tailor-made lighting and has a reputation for top class customer service.

The Challenge

Jeff approached the Business Growth Hub for help in taking the business to the next level. He was particularly interested in the mentoring service, and working with someone who could act a sounding board and offer insights around growing the business.

The Solution

We’ve got very ambitious plans for growth and with the Hub’s help we’re now much clearer about the steps we are going to have to take to achieve them.

Jeff Fuller, Director

Jeff teamed up with mentor Dave Thornton, who used his consultancy background in procurement and supply chain management and helped him focus on developing a long-term business plan, as well as taking a more strategic approach to running the company.

Jeff explains: “As well as creating a new business plan, Dave helped me to identify trends in the marketplace so that I could create additional sales and generally be more aware and responsive to annual peaks and troughs in sales.”

With an eye on future growth – Jeff has plans to double growth year-on-year – they also reviewed the business set up, looking at issues such as supply chain, staffing and finance.

Jeff has now started working with a bookkeeper and a virtual assistant − who deals with day-to-day tasks – together with a member of his team to help with design and marketing, allowing Jeff to focus on activities to grow the business.

Jeff has also attended Hub workshops around social media and brand awareness, all of which have had a positive impact on sales.

“Working with the Hub has been something of a revelation,” explains Jeff. “We’ve got very ambitious plans for growth and with the Hub’s help we’re now much clearer about the steps we are going to have to take to achieve them.”

In order to position the business for ongoing growth, Jeff and master craftsman Gwyn Carless re-envisioned The Light Yard’s brand identity, underlining its artisanal offering and business model.
