Wigan food firm cooks up energy savings

The Business

Kings Quality Foods is saving more than £10,000 per year after installing new LED light fittings and implementing a number of other zero cost measures at its factory in Wigan.

The family-run company has manufactured cooked meats for over a century and supplies UK-wide to supermarkets and large catering companies.

The Challenge

After expressing concerns that the electrical supply capacity to its 70,000ft2 factory could hold back growth, the firm began working with environmental business advisors at Greater Manchester’s GC Business Growth Hub to find ways to cut its energy use.

An audit of the premises and energy logging of key equipment revealed a number of energy saving opportunities, many of which had no up-front cost.

The Results

New procedures were put in place to match equipment start up and shutdown to production activity and improve system maintenance of refrigerators, while staff were reminded of good housekeeping measures such as shutting doors to chilled areas.

The Hub also helped Kings Quality Foods through the process of upgrading lighting in its manufacturing, storage and dispatch areas to LEDs by preparing the business case, quantifying savings, helping to source a local supplier and providing grant funding.

The upgrade has not only reduced the electricity consumption of lighting but also improved the efficiency of refrigeration equipment, because the new light fittings emit less heat into cooled areas.

The payback period for the investment was slashed from two years to just 12 months thanks to the Hub’s 50 per cent grant funding.

In total, the full energy saving drive is saving over £10,000 a year and has cut the company’s carbon footprint by more than 40 tonnes CO2 equivalent.

Lynsey Hamer, Health & Safety Manager at Kings Quality Foods, said: “By keeping our energy consumption as low as possible we are able to save money, reduce our environmental impact and leave space in our electrical supply capacity for future growth.

“The support we’ve received from GC Business Growth Hub and our advisor Claire Scott has been first-rate and we look forward to investigating other opportunities going forward like solar power, voltage optimisation, power factor correction and heat recovery.”
