This is the first in a series of masterclasses completely focused on supporting textile manufacturing businesses to grow their businesses. The session will be lead by reputable textile manufacturers sharing their experiences – good and bad. You will have the opportunity to gain insight around how those manufacturers have navigated through their own growth journey and lessons learned. This first session will look at best practice in leading your business and your staff through building and recruiting successful teams including apprentices.
Andy Ogden from Culimeta Saveguard will share his experiences of leading change, communication and motivation, and how to lead more and manage less
Helen Symonds from Sygmatex will talk about the recruitment and retention problems the industry face and how that can be tackled, including the employment of apprentices.
Expect lots of conversation between the attendees and the speakers.
The masterclass will be followed by an optional tour of the host’s new English Fine Cottons mill which has been recently developed and opened by Culimeta Saveguard.
Helen Symonds HR and H&S Manager at Sigmatex (UK) Limited
Sigmatex is the world’s leading independent converter of carbon fibre, developing and manufacturing carbon fibre textiles for composite material applications. Helen is a member of the Senior Management Team and has a strategic and day to day responsibility for all HR and Health & Safety issues, including people management, training and development activities, recruitment and retention.
Helen’s role also includes focusing on continuous improvement within the HR and H&S functions including the setting of company critical success factors, objectives and key performance indicators to support business growth, and the implementation of H&S management systems ensuring compliance and best practice.
Andy Ogden General Manager at Culimeta-Saveguard (CSL) & English Fine Cottons
Andy has executive team responsibility for CSL, operating from two neighbouring former cotton mills in Dukinfield. The company spins and processes technical fiber yarns. In his role as the company manager Andy has taken CSL turnover from £2m to over £20m, negative PBT to 10% EBIT, grown employment from 25 to approx. 300 and secured long-term government investment.
English Fine Cottons was ‘born’ when CSL embarked on an ambitious project to bring cotton spinning back to the UK including a multi-million pound restoration of Tower Mill, installation of state-of-the-art equipment and a local recruitment campaign. Andy has managed this project from initial concept, through due diligence and into start-up. Driven by the desire to bring cotton spinning back to the UK, meet the strong global demand for luxury goods with the ‘Made in Britain’ stamp, and reverse the decline in the British textile industry.
