This is the first in a programme of 4 masterclasses that has been designed for Altrincham BID Levy paying Business to Business organisations.   Delivered with support from the Business Growth Hub the programme aims to give eligible business insight into the key areas of Strategy, Finance, Digital and Leadership.   

This first session will focus on Strategy and cover:

  • Myth-busting what does the evidence tell us about strategy development?
  • What is the difference between strategy and operation and why does it matter that we can separate these?
  • How can you create opportunities to have strategic conversations with team, clients, customers, suppliers and partners?
  • Scenario planning, developing and testing strategic hypotheses.
  • Using principles of lean to inform, refresh and develop strategy.
  • How do you test and refine strategic ideas?
  • Why risk matters – understanding, tracking, mediating and accepting risk.
  • What is governance, why do we need it, and how do we use it to promote strategy delivery rather than stifling it?
  • Model governance: What are the principles of great governance? What can we learn from large and regulated organisations and how do we apply these principles to smaller organisations without creating unnecessary burden?

What will attendees learn / take away from the session? 

Information, tactics and resources to help develop, improve and embed strategy within their organisations to include:

  •          An easy, reusable strategy development approach.
  •          Risk scanning templates.
  •          Risk management templates.
  •          Example data and reporting templates.
  •          An outline of the principles of model governance.

Participants will also be introduced to peer-to-peer learning and support techniques and will have unlimited email Q&A support for three months following the workshop.

Ruth Thomas works for Ruby Star Associates who are a dynamic  evidence-based consultancy.  They develop approaches, products and services that directly respond to the needs of SME businesses across a range of sectors. 

They recognise that todays customers and businesses owners are smart and well informed therefore one of their biggest differentiators is how much they invest in keeping up to date with the latest research working closely with a number of universities and academics, collaborating on research programmes and also undertaking their own research to ensure their services including masterclasses like this are up to date and current.

Ruth herself has won Digital Business of the Year Warrington Business Awards 2013, Start Up Business of the Year Warrington Business Awards 2012, Awarded Small Business Sunday by Theo Paphitis 2012, Awarded Jacqueline Gold WOW 2012, Start up Business of the Year, Women in Business Start-up Business of the Year 2012, Shortlisted for Business Woman of the Year Enterprise Vision Awards hold a HND in Business, ILM qualified and Train the Trainer qualified.

Some of her key skills are around training, business start-ups, leadership and management training, social media, coaching, mentoring and strategy development.

Ruth has experience of running her own business and supporting others to set up businesses through to consulting in growing their existing ones as well as over 10 years experience of training in all aspects of learning and development from new starters to management and leadership training.
