Volcanic erupts into international markets

Overview:

Founded in 2010, Volcanic are a digital marketing agency and one of the UK’s leading suppliers of specialist recruitment websites and job boards.

The Stockport-based company works with recruitment agencies of all sizes, from multi-million PLCs to smaller specialist recruiters. Clients include Oliver James, Pegasus and Evergrad.

Over the past 12 months, the company has opened offices in London, Liverpool and Doncaster, and in November 2015 marked the start of their   international expansion with the launch of an office in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur.

The company focuses on the user experience, charging customers a monthly licence rather than a large upfront build and design fee. 

The challenge:

Volcanic contacted the Hub to find out the best ways to further develop their international presence and expand the business overseas. They also wanted to investigate the possibilities of a marketing campaign to target a broad range of domestic and international clients. 

The solution:

Bob Dackiw, business growth advisor at the Hub, explains: “The Hub was established to help businesses grow in both the UK and overseas. Many businesses have the potential to develop further, but do not necessarily have the knowledge and recourses to expand. The Hub allows business leaders to have access to experts and advice to enable growth and become more competitive.”

The Hub worked with Volcanic to build and implement a global expansion strategy and helped them secure a £3,000 grant which was used to carry out crucial market research and assess the demand for their services in several key countries.

This was backed up by a series of trips with UK Trade and Investment (UKTI), a Hub partner, and there are now plans to open further offices in in Singapore, New Zealand and Australia.

With a turnover of £6 million, and workforce of ten before they started working with the Hub, Volcanic is expected to increase its turnover to £2.5m by March 2017, rising to £7.5m in 2018, by which time staff count could have tripled.

Volcanic has also increased its client base from 20 to 100 over the last 12 months, a figure which is expected to rise to 300 by the end of the year. They have also been named as one of the UKTI North West Export Champions for 2016.

Rob Wilde, co-founder of Volcanic, says: “It has long been our intention to grow Volcanic internationally. Working with Business Growth Hub and UKTI allowed us to set initiatives and differentiate ourselves in overseas markets, cementing our global footprint.

“In Kuala Lumpur we were able to employ some brilliant local talent and build up a base in the area. Now we are looking to expand into further territories and with ongoing access to support services from the Hub, Volcanic will continue to grow both abroad and in the UK.”
