Radial Line Sheetmetal is a Wigan-based engineering company specialising in sheet metal fabrication. Combining skilled workers with advanced machinery and high quality materials, the business employs seven staff.
The key issue for the company was cash flow, which director Justin Ganley felt needed to improve if the business was to achieve high growth. A number of skills gaps within the workforce were also identified.
The company was refereed to the Business Growth Hub by the Engagement Team at Wigan Council and began working with growth advisor Bob Dackiw. He has introduced the business to a range of different teams at the Hub, each dealing with a specific need.
With Justin’s wife Kay appointed as the new office manager, they immediately began working with the Access to Finance team to address the cash flow issues and explore the options for increasing the company’s overdraft facilities in order to support sales.
To encourage growth, Bob suggested the business needed to refocus its efforts on securing more clients requiring high-end stainless steel work in the food, pharmaceutical and chemical markets. He also suggested that the company adopt a more proactive approach to finding engineering leads within the Wigan area, and Justin has since attended the Meet the Buyer at the Wigan Expo.
The business has also revamped its website to better promote its services, and developed its social media presence.
As part of the Hub’s holistic support, Bob has also referred the business to the Manufacturing Advisory Service (now part of Business Growth Service), which is now working with Justin to implement new quality management standards. Staff training is also being addressed by one of the Hub’s other partners, the Skills Company, which is training employees in a diverse range of areas including First Aid, Health & Safety and social media.
Since starting to work with the Hub, Radial Line has created one new job, with a potential five more to follow in 2015. The company has already increased turnover and expects to grow by a further 10% year on year.
As Bob explains: “We’ve helped the business to adopt a new approach that’s much more focused on continuous growth. This has given Justin a lot more confidence and the impetus to start working towards ISO accreditation, and that will help to open up lots more potential new markets for them.”
