Paul Sheals, MD of Manchester Online Marketing Company Rocketfish Ltd, explains why they are looking to graduates and apprentices to spearhead their expansion programme

Rocketfish Ltd is a fresh thinking Digital Marketing and Search Engine Optimisation agency employing 45 people in our Manchester and Blackpool offices.

With over 1000 clients and growing at a rate of 60 per month, our rapidly growing business helps clients to get the most from the digital side of their business.

During the last few years there has been a paradigm change in the way many companies allocate their marketing budget to digital and social media rather than traditional methods of advertising and the way they generate enquiries and eventually more sales for their business.

Much of the work in developing social media campaigns is labour intensive, requiring intelligent young people with a knowledge of social media and a thirst for learning other elements of the online marketing process.

To meet that demand we are increasingly choosing to employ graduates and apprentices for both technical and customer facing positions, giving them an opportunity to quickly learn all aspects of online marketing and progress through the company. This gives us and our clients access to an incredibly smart group of young people who really have their fingers on the pulse of emerging technologies.

We have recently employed five apprentices through the Chamber of Commerce and two graduates from UCLAN, all of whom are working incredibly well within our business. We have also previously employed graduates from both Salford University and UCLAN, one of whom has since gone on to work at the BBC and another at Channel 4. We have recently completed a recruitment drive interviewing young people enrolled on a level 2 marketing course at the Churchgate Academy and as our business grows we will continue to provide opportunities for many more young people from the Manchester area.

We have been both surprised and delighted by the high quality of young people we have taken on through the apprenticeship scheme. They are highly motivated individuals who have clearly benefited from the structured training they have recieved at the Churchgate Academy.

We are proud to be able to employ a number of young people who might otherwise be claiming benefits and suffering the many social problems associated with unemployment, giving them training and a career in a fast growing relevant business sector that offers real potential for their future.
